John Lennon festival to return next year – with a different name
A festival in the north of Scotland to celebrate John Lennon’s links with a remote Highland village will carry on next year, but under a different name.
The Northern Lights Festival in Durness, which was recently voted best new event at the UK Festival Awards, had been permitted to use the singer-songwriter’s name for one year only.
Director and founder Mike Merritt said Yoko Ono had allowed the use of the former Beatle’s name to help establish the event.
‘I am in discussions with various people about next year, but couldn’t use the John Lennon name because it was licensed for 2007,’ he said.
‘We are very grateful to Yoko for letting us do that.’
The village, which has a population of 356 people, welcomed more than 1,000 visitors for the three-day event.
John Lennon visited Durness during his childhood summers, before returning in 1969.
