Berliners take part in break up show-and-tell
A travelling exhibition which displays the remnants of failed relationships is currently on show in a former squat in Berlin.
The Museum of Broken Relationships asks the residents of each city visited to donate items which represent the inevitable mementos left by anything from short lived flings to drawn out divorces.
One Berliner donated a wedding dress, while another handed in an axe used to break up a cheating lover’s furniture.
The exhibition was devised by two Zagreb artists, Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic, who wanted to express their pain creatively when they split up.
Currently in the Tacheles art centre in the heart of the city, it has also been on show in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovenia.
Ms Vistica said putting items on display and talking about them can be therapeutic.
‘The normal impulse is to destroy the mementoes of a relationship in order to recover, but we thought of using creativity to overcome the pain of the experience and also remember the joy those objects once held for us.’
The exhibition will travel from Berlin to Belgrade, Skopje and Stockholm.
