Columbian artist takes a crack at the Tate Modern

The Tate Modern yesterday unveiled its latest work of art – a huge faultline-like crack along the concrete floor of the gallery’s Turbine Hall.

The line snakes to a length of 548 ft, with gallery staff on hand to ensure curious art lovers don’t disappear into the gap.

Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo is behind the fissure, but kept the details of its creation close to her heart.

When asked how deep the crack goes however, she commented: ‘It’s bottomless. It’s as deep as humanity.’

The work is entitled Shibboleth, and will be on display until 6 April.
