MTV is to encourage youth activism by launching an online social network, providing a tool for those interested in improving their communities.

The site Think.MTV.com is backed by funding from foundations set up by AOL founder Steve Case and Microsoft’s Bill and Melinda Gates, as well as the Goldhirsh Foundation and MCJ Foundation.

Users can create pages on the new site with images and videos, which could then be aired on the online or cable network.

The platform is a way for the network to improve its online present. MTV President Christina Norman said: “The Think platform creates an umbrella to be able to talk about a number of issues at a time.”

Young creators who use the tool to make a difference to real communities could receive up to £250,000, awarded by Think.MTV and the Knight Foundation.
