The creator of Paddington Bear has said it would take more than “the combined current withdrawals from Northern Rock” to wean the character off his beloved marmalade.

Michael Bond was responding to criticism of a recent television advertisement, which features Paddington sampling a Marmite sandwich instead.

He also dismissed claims that he had been paid a huge sum of money for the endorsement.

Managing director of Paddington & Co, Karen Jankel, who is also Bond’s daughter, said: “Unilever wanted to encourage people to try Marmite in their sandwiches, and they were looking for a character famous for eating sandwiches.

“The point of the advert is that Paddington always has marmalade in his sandwiches. He simply tries Marmite.”
