For most people, Swedish-Argentine troubadour Gonzalez will always be known for his song ‘Heartbeats’ soundtracking that Sony Bravia ad with the bouncy balls in San Francisco, and that’s his main problem. What makes his sound perfect in the background of adverts also makes it utterly forgettable when it comes centre stage. Here, his guitar-picking is skilled, his vocals silky smooth, his songwriting solid, but his lack of incisive melody or insightful lyrics effectively turns In Our Nature into sonic wallpaper. Oh, and if I hear one more ‘innovative’ acoustic guitar version of Massive Attack’s seminal ‘Teardrop’, I’m gonna scream. Enough already.
