A Series of Unanswered Questions (Sonorous)
INDIE
Melding atmospheric electronics and indie rock guitar histrionics is often a tricky gig; the two battle for supremacy in the mix and often end up cancelling each other out. Sonorous live up to their name by injecting their plaintive rock songs with a hail of plangent bleeps, bumps scratches and hums to create something big, bold and affecting. Their sound is reminiscent of Elbow, The Associates, Mogwai and The Cure in places but distinct, and every time they begin to get a bit too overwrought, they retrieve it with some crashing drums, brass swells or other suitable majestic loudness. And while for the most part this works, a few songs sag in the middle, but this handsome long player has real heart.
