Hitlist - The best classical & opera
• BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Thursday Night Series The opening concert of the BBC SSO’s new series is inspired by heavenly bodies, centred on Holst’s everlastingly vivid portraits of The Planets, one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever written. On this occasion it will be televised live on BBC Two Scotland. City Halls, Glasgow, Thu 20 Sep.
• Scottish Ensemble: Passionate Romantics Another season starts, this time inspired by passion and romance. The luscious, but infrequently aired Chausson Concert for violin, piano and strings was a great success when first performed, but its unusual scoring, originally using string quartet, means that this is a fairly rare opportunity to hear it live. City Halls, Glasgow, Thu 4 Oct; Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 5 Oct.
• Edinburgh Quartet Edinburgh University’s free Tuesday lunchtime series gets under way with one of the city’s favourite ensembles. In the month that would have marked the prominent Scottish composer’s 80th birthday, their programme juxtaposes Thomas Wilson’s String Quartet No 3 with Beethoven’s Op 18 No 1 Reid Concert Hall, Edinburgh, Tue 2 Oct.
