Kojak star ‘captivated’ by Aberdeen
Kojak star Telly Savalas was recruited to promote Aberdeen around the world as the oil capital of Europe, it has emerged.
The actor provided a voice-over for a short film called ‘Telly Savalas Looks at Aberdeen’ in 1980 – although he never visited the city and completed the recording in London.
He describes Aberdeen as “preserved in silver grey granite” and ends his commentary with: “I was captivated by everything I saw and I will be back, that’s for sure.
“So long Aberdeen and here’s lookin’ at you.”
Retired Aberdeen Council planner, John Souter, who was involved in the project, said: “The idea was to send something like 50 or 60 copies around planet earth to advertise the oil-related capital of Europe.
“The rest, as they say, is history. A quarter of a century has passed and it has stood the test of time.”
