Damien Hirst’s diamond-encrusted skull is officially the world’s most expensive piece of contemporary art, after it was bought for £50 million.
An unnamed investment group bought the skull, which is covered with 8,601 diamonds, in a cash-only deal, with Hirst retaining a stake in the artwork.
A spokeswoman for the White Cube gallery, where the skull is currently on display, said: “The intention behind Damien retaining part ownership is so that the skull is seen by a broader audience.”
Hirst wants the item entitled ‘For the Love of God’ to go on display alongside the British Museum’s ancient treasures.
He said of the skull, which features a 52-carat pink diamond: “I hope it makes people feel good.”
