Red Road Andrea Arnold’s voyeuristic Glasgow-set thriller stalks it’s way into cinemas. One of the best films of the year without a shadow of a doubt. Selected release from Fri 27 Oct.

The Empire in Africa Philippe Diaz’ biased but powerfully pitched documentary investigates the human rights abuses committed by armed factions during Sierra Leone’s recent civil war. Showing as part of Black History Month. GFT, Glasgow from Sun 22-Tue 24 Oct only.

Africa in Motion Ambitious African Film Festival which has something for everyone. The opening film is Souleymane Cissé’s wonderful 1987 film Yeelen while other highlights include Idrissa Ouédraogo’s Yaaba, rare shorts from the 60s and 70s and a more recent selection of documentaries. www.african-in-motion.org.uk Filmhouse, Edinburgh from Fri 20 Oct.

Danger: Diabolik! Maria Bava’s amazing 1968 superhero comic book adaptation gets a rare big screen outing as part of Psychotronic Cinema’s Mondo Italia! strand. Filmhouse, Edinburgh (Thu 19 Oct only); GFT, Glasgow (Wed 8 Nov only).
