Finding mirth in the mundane

Michael McIntyre has the look of someone your mother would like. Unashamedly middle class in his dress, mannerisms and speech, it’s easy to see why he is being heralded as the latest thing in ‘posh comedy’. In terms of demeanour and delivery, McIntyre is undoubtedly one of the most talented comedians you will see this August, and within seconds he has warmed the audience up and brought them onside with his beaming and infectious smile allied to a confidence with which he commands his space.

It’s a shame then that the material here doesn’t do his obvious abilities justice; the majority of the hour is spent finding humour in the most mundane areas of life from basic bodily functions like sneezing to tube travel and parking. The show is consistently amusing, and despite the unbearable heat in the venue, the hour flies by. But there is a lack of any high points and his set is begging for that something extra to help it transcend from the enjoyable to the unmissable. (Gordon Eldrett)
