Uneven take on an Australian classic
Kenneth Ross’ great Australian tale of official injustice still feels powerful in the telling. In it, three Australian officers are put on trial for the murder of prisoners in the dog days of the second Boer War. Great courage is shown in the face of the indifference and vengefulness of the British authorities as the piece unfolds towards the inevitable execution.
There are a couple of nice cameos in the course of Phil Nichol’s production, notably by Alan Frances in a series of roles, but not all the performances are of equal quality. All the same, it’s a good story with some real tension and humour on the way. (Steve Cramer)
