The Honeymoon Suite

Comic cabaret with a dark side

Mikelangelo and Undine Francesca vaunt to entertain, to hypnotise and twist a wry smile out of you with their deader than deadpan, darkly comic cabaret. She as the chanteuse with a voice that reaches notes lower than the bowels of hell and he by channelling the spirits of singers dead (Elvis) and deathly (Nick Cave), in a darker incarnation than his usual role at the helm of vaudeville gypsy band, The Black Sea Gentlemen. Together they elucidate the ghastly secrets of honeymoon suites around the world through the medium of song, accompanied by Mikelangelo’s guitar.

Musically the pair are very proficient. The pace ranges from funereal to 50s numbers that are rocking enough to make your bone marrow dance. The slower songs would benefit from more narrative thrust to keep things moving along but when they crank up the camp (and the amp) the results are worthy of any Tim Burton musical. (Suzanne Black)
