Siamsoir: The Battle for Eire

Fairy rings and Irish dancing

Their name comes from the Gaelic word for ‘entertainer’, and that’s precisely what young company Siamsoir’s fusion of traditional Irish and contemporary dance sets out to do. Trawling the misty myths of ancient Eire for subject matter, writer-choreographer Jenn Hogan has put together a piece of dance theatre that combines the high-kicking spectacle and broad family appeal of Riverdance with the sombre warnings of WB Yeats’ poem The Stolen Child.

When the villagers of Nareena are threatened by malevolent forces, they make the mistake of entering a fairy circle and striking up a bargain with the little people. I think we all know that that can only end in tears, but, true to their name, Siamsoir promise that everyone lives happily ever after. ‘At the end of the day, this is a fun show that I think Michael Flatley would approve of,’ says Hogan. ‘We just want people to have a good time.’ (Kirstin Innes)
