Film noir spoof

It’s hard to know who enjoys this show more – kids, who help private detective, Johnny Pieman solve a dastardly crime, or adults who spend the whole hour spotting references to film noir classics.

In a dark, atmospheric room, the tale of Pieman unfolds. His quest to make the tastiest pies in the world, put ‘piecoon’ Dale McFilling out of business, and win the gorgeous Davina Pastry, is a noble one. That is until greed gets the better of him and turns his friends into enemies. Then it’s up to us, the audience, to find out who stabbed him in the back.

Riddled with pie references, the script is cleverly silly – although few, if any, of the film noir references will register in young minds. Not that it matters, because the basic storyline is fun enough, and the talented cast has a natural, likeable style that grabs you from the start. (Kelly Apter)
