Hit me with your rhythm stick
Before you leave home to attend this workshop, take a good look around you. What have you got that’s broken, unwanted, and, most crucially of all, makes a good noise when you whack it, shake it or scrape it? Whatever it is, bring it along – because the Bang On! folks will help you make sweet music with it.
Well, maybe not sweet, but certainly loud. This lively workshop, held by professional drummers Dave Smith and Katie Stephenson, is a simple introduction to rhythm and timing. Using entirely recycled materials as their instruments, Smith and Stephenson have turned the world of percussion on its head (as witnessed in their innovative Fringe show, Bang On!) and now they want you to join in the fun.
There’s only so much you can achieve in 50 minutes, and before you’ve grasped what to hit and when, the workshop’s over. More time, a tighter structure, and this workshop would indeed be bang on. (Kelly Apter)
Sweet ECA, 0870 241 0136, until 27 Aug (not 20 & 21), 11am, £6 (£5).
