The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me

Lively Roald Dahl adaptation

With all of his books recently being re-published, the re-make of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a touring production of The Twits doing the rounds, Roald Dahl is more popular than ever. So it’s quite timely that York-based theatre company, Rubber Duck should adapt another of his quirky novels.

The tale itself is the stuff of every child’s dream. A young boy makes friends with a very tall giraffe, extremely energetic monkey and a pelican with the most enormous beak in the world. Together, they help the boy take over a disused sweet shop and return it to its former glory.

Dahl’s writing is undoubtedly the best thing about this show, and with such great material to work with, Rubber Duck can’t really fail. While the acting may not be on a par with the likes of Tall Stories, this is still an enjoyable show with fluffy costumes, charming songs and a very bouncy monkey. (Kelly Apter)
