Oban writer with a filmic bent

When the movie of Morvern Callar opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival back in 2002, there was much talk that this would be the first of many film adaptations of Alan Warner’s work. Frankly, the thought of anyone trying to get a script out of the all-too aptly titled These Demented Lands is enough to make your cranium explode, but The Man Who Walks is more of a contender for the screenplay treatment by a certain team-mate of Warner’s from their Children of Albion Rovers days. ‘Irvine, god bless him, has bought the film rights, and he keeps phoning me up with the most outlandish casting suggestions that you can imagine,’ notes Warner. ‘All of which I laugh off and then it turns out he’s actually in meetings with these people.’

Warner has come over from his Spanish home for two Festival dates, including a List-sponsored event, and while his last book, The Worms Can Carry Me to Heaven will be uppermost in everyone’s minds, Warner is keen to look into the future. ‘I’m still working on my book about a Scotsman and an Englishman who build swimming pools in Spain and I’m also writing a sequel to The Sopranos, with the girls a few years older,’ he says. There may one day be a film of that one, but a name change may be required. (Brian Donaldson)
