Comedian Steve Coogan has been signed up to tell the life story of Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards in a film due to go into production early next year. The project, which has been in the pipeline for a number of years, will be shot in the UK and Calgary - the Canadian city where Edwards came last in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Edwards, who was working as a plasterer when he qualified for the event and claims to be scared of heights, described the casting as ‘brilliant’. Coogan said: “His story is a very British story, and he is a very British kind of hero. When I read the story, I found it funny but, more surprisingly, quite moving. Quirky, dysfunctional, slightly nerdy, but his balls must be made of titanium.” The script for the as yet untitled film is by Sean Macaulay, based on the original by Simon Kelton, while Declan Lowney will direct.
