The Dears
On first listen a band like The Dears sound so alarmingly familiar it’s worrying. They evoke the spirit of early Smiths, Blur and rosier periods of The Cure. It is easy to confuse this familiarity with unoriginality, in fact, despite sounding remarkably like a Morrissey/Damon Albarn hybrid Murray Lightburn (great name!) could be branded a copyist. What the Montreal-based sextet are doing though is harnessing the melodic magic of these three bands and displaying it on their most excellent latest album Gang of Losers. Petty special stuff by all accounts.
