• The Walker Writer/director Paul Schrader returns with another excellent existential character drama, a sequel of sorts to Taxi Driver and Light Sleeper. Woody Harrelson stars as an openly gay high society chaperone who becomes embroiled in a dirty little political scandal. Selected release from Fri 10 Aug.
• Longing Thought-provoking, seamlessly executed German adultery drama. Filmhouse, Edinburgh from Fri 10 Aug.
• Taxidermia Jaw droppingly perverse Hungarian generational drama. This needs to be seen to be believed. GFT, Glasgow from Mon 13 Aug.
• Flanders The brutality of war and venality of man, Bruno Dumont style. GFT, Glasgow, Fri 10–Sun 12 Aug.
• Les Petites Vacances Poignant French road drama in which a grandmother (Bernadette Lafont) takes her grandchildren to the Swiss mountains and faces her demons. GFT, Glasgow, Fri 10, Sat 11 & Mon 13 Aug.
• The Seventh Seal The late great Ingmar Bergman’s most iconic film in a new digital print. GFT, Glasgow, Sun 12 & Mon 13 Aug.
• John Cassavetes Excellent season of the great filmmaker and actor’s work, including his little seen 1977 film, Opening Night. Filmhouse, Edinburgh from Fri 10 Aug.
• Bunny Lake is Missing Otto Preminger’s 1965 psychological thriller gets a decent DVD release, Out Mon 13 Aug (DD Home Entertainment).
