A kitschtastic camp fest
Lycra, spandex, cheesy hosts, uber-innuendo and even a recorded welcome from Terry Wogan himself; it is indeed, almost Eurovision. There’s a palpable sense of excitement as badges are distributed, flags and clackers are sold and the cast do a warm up with the audience practising Mexican waves and the like. Our hosts for the evening are over dressed, over made-up, over eager and adept at mixed metaphors - excellent. However, ‘the tip of the ice-cream’ has yet to come as they introduce us to the competitors, including a cheesy boy band, Abba- alikes, clothes that rip and reveal and the post-industrial, post-modern entry which excludes any actual singing.
It cleverly pokes fun at the phenomenon that is Eurovision, not varying far from the actual show format (which is funny enough in the first place) this version pushes the jokes to their boundaries, exploiting those classic Eurovision stereotypes we all know and love. The obvious singing and dancing abilities of the cast are what make this take off work. It’s a unique experience and there’s more camp kitsch than you can shake your neon hot pants at.
Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 27 Aug (not 14, 21), 9.45pm, £11–£12.50 (£9–£10.50).
