Glitter and gay rights
Doubtless huge progress has been made regarding gay rights in recent decades but there are still reports of gay people being persecuted across the world. Iraqis are allegedly being murdered by the police force as a result of their sexual orientation, and a recent gay rights march in Russia culminated in Richard Fairbrass, of Right Said Fred fame, being beaten up by a group of nationalists. Undoubtedly something needs to be done but could that something be a stonewall reminder? Focusing on the build-up to the riot, as seen through the eyes of La Miranda, a drag queen and the last living Stonewall witness, with lip-syncing and lively dance routines, this piece is about love, freedom and equality. Unfortunately the play sits uncomfortably on the fence between highlighting the politics, making as it does no allusions to depicting historical reality, and bringing out the humour. Moments like the rendition of ‘My Gang’ were priceless but few and far between, leaving us questioning if La Miranda’s version of events is really the reminder we need.
Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 27 Aug (not 13, 20), 5.50pm, £11–£12.50 (£9.50–£11).
