Jonathan Ross has slammed the BBC - his former employers - as ''over cautious and defensive''.

Jonathan Ross has blasted the BBC as "over cautious and defensive".

The TV star - who resigned from the channel in the wake of the Andrew Sachs prank phone-call scandal with Russell Brand in 2008 - will launch his new chat show on ITV1 on Saturday (03.09.11) and admits he is looking forward to more freedom from his new employers.

He said: "Before I even left the BBC I signed this deal with ITV and they've been terrific.

"I'm looking forward to being on ITV. It does feel like there'll be a greater degree of freedom than people are allowed at the BBC these days. I know I'm partly responsible for that but I think they are being a little bit over-cautious and defensive."

However, despite his newfound freedom at ITV1, Jonathan claims his new show will be less controversial than 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross'.

He added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "We're on just after 'X Factor' so some of the family audience will probably stay with us. It might not be as full on as 'Friday Night', which was on later."

A BBC insider said the channel was disappointed by the star's criticism and blamed him as "the cause of so many problems and changes that we've since had to make".
