There's great dance on offer all year round at the King's Theatre and Festival Theatre, Edinburgh.

State of Matter

Street-inspired contemporary dance

The stark lighting and simple uniform of black tailcoats characterise the restraint that permeates this performance by Hereford’s 2FaCeD DaNcE Company. There is no narrative to this show, rather it is a collection of unrelated set pieces, the choreography mainly inspired by street performance.

There’s an endearing lack of synchronicity between the eight male performers in the ensemble sections, with the result that audiences only really gain a purchase on the athleticism and versatility of the performers in the solo passages.

Intermittently the group explodes the stage to a thumping industrial soundtrack, spinning and tumbling to appreciative whoops from the spectators, and it is at these points that the show really comes alive.
Otherwise, while the commitment of the performers is undeniable, there’s a coldness and lack of humour about this piece that makes it difficult to fully engage with. (Allan Radcliffe)

Zoo Southside, 662 6892, until 18 Aug (not 12), 1pm, £8 (£6).
