'Coronation Street' bosses have axed Audrey Roberts' cross-dressing lover.
The controversial character - played by Andrew Hall - first appeared in the ITV1 soap six months ago as transvestite Marc Selby, better-known for his gruff-voiced, stiletto-wearing alter-ago, Marcia.
However, after the unusual storyline failed to strike a chord with 'Corrie' viewers, TV chiefs have admitted they may have made a mistake with the character's introduction.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "The plot hasn't been for everyone but we're glad we tackled the issue."
Marc's shock exit will leave pensioner Audrey - played by 'Coronation Street' mainstay Sue Nicholls - devastated after a series of dramatic twists and turns force him to leave Weatherfield for good.
Despite her feelings for her cross-dressing lover, Audrey has previously admitted Marc is a constant embarrassment to her when he dons his alter-ego Marcia's flamboyant attire.
She recently told him: "I'm not sure I can carry on like this. Like it or not people round here will see you as a freak."
