ITV1 soap 'Coronation Street' will introduce a new Chinese resident next month, and bosses hope this will lead to an entire Chinese family moving in to the street.
'Coronation Street' is set to introduce a Chinese character next month.
The ITV1 soap - whose only previous Chinese cast member was chip shop owner Mr. Wong in 2005 - has reportedly made the new addition of waitress Xin in order to increase its appeal to multi-cultural audiences.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Manchester has a big Chinatown and it's a crime that Corrie bosses have ignored it for so long. They hope Xin becomes a big character and that a whole family can be introduced."
The new Weatherfield resident - who will work at Chinese restaurant The Royal Panda - is set to move in with friend Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) and her boyfriend Graeme Proctor (Craig Gazey), and quickly becomes a hit with street regulars after recognising them because of their orders.
She tells cafe owner Roy Cropper (David Neilson): "I know you . you're sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and prawn crackers."
The actress who will play 19-year-old college graduate Xin has not yet been announced.
