Carl Barat was inspired to write personal material for his self-titled solo album following the demise of his bands The Libertines and Dirty Pretty Things.

Carl Barat's solo album is a "break-up" record.

The 'Can't Stand Me Now' singer says his self-titled LP was written to address the aftermath of the ending of his bands The Libertines - who briefly reunited earlier this year - and Dirty Pretty Things and contains his most personal lyrics.

He explained: "By that I mean the break-up of two bands. It's the first time I've written directly about things that have happened.

"Previously I have made up stories and characters so that my songs could be about escapism and allowing me to step outside of myself."

The rocker also revealed he agreed to reunite with The Libertines because splitting up Dirty Pretty Things last year made him more open to addressing the past.

He added: "In ending dirty Pretty Things, and the black emptiness that came with that, I tried to find catharsis, to understand my past.

"This turning inwards allowed me to put it into perspective and get to a point where I was comfortable with it again.

"It was a big, daunting thing that people had been asking me to do for years."
