Bill Roache wishes his late wife could have witnessed his "dream come true" having his sons join him on 'Coronation Street'.
The legendary actor - whose sons Linus, 46, and 24-year-old James are starring alongside their dad as his alter-ego Ken Barlow's long-lost relatives - is thrilled at working closely with his loved-ones to help celebrate the ITV1 show's 50th anniversary.
Bill - who has been in the soap since it started in 1960 - said: "I couldn't have a better anniversary present than having them both with me. It's a bit of a dream come true actually."
In the new storyline, Linus, who is Bill's his son from his first marriage to actress Anna Cooper, will play Ken's homophobic son Lawrence, while 24-year-old James, who the actor had with his late wife Sara, will play Lawrence's gay son, also called James.
Bill is overjoyed to have his children with him on set, but the news is bittersweet without his wife Sara alive to see it.
After being married to Bill for 31 years, Sara died suddenly at their home last year at the age of 58.
Bill said: "Sara would've loved my sons being on the Street with me. I feel she's very much still with me. In my understanding she is still alive."
The 78-year-old actor is the longest-serving member of the 'Coronation Street' team, having started on the show in 1960, when he dated Susan Cunningham.
In the new storyline, Ken will discover he has a secret son and grandson after finding a love note from his former girlfriend and deciding to track her down, only to learn she had given birth to his child many years before.
