The Lemonheads
INDIE ROCK
(Vagrant)
At their peak, Evan Dando’s Lemonheads brilliantly combined the slacker punk power of grunge with perfect pop melodies, and while this is not quite a vintage demonstration of that, it’s still an impressively feisty return after nine years away. Enlisting the rhythm section of legendary hardcore outfit The Descendents has given Dando’s ironic and bittersweet tales a real edge, helped by some robust J Mascis wig-outs. You suspect Dando has been through too much to ever write that perfect perky pop again, but there is enough of the old Lemonheads genius in evidence here, now with a tinge of world-weary regret which does it no harm at all.
