Jason Manford and Alex Jones scored more viewers on their 'One Show' debut than former presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley.
The duo pulled in a record 4.5 million viewers on Monday evening (16.08.10) - up on the average 4.3million in 2009 when their predecessors were on the sofa.
Overjoyed BBC One bosses also confirmed the ratings were a million more than the same date last year.
Alex and comedian Jason - who admitted to having "sleepless nights" in the run up to his debut - were praised by a string of celebrities as they spoke to Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg on the sofa.
Chris Evans, set to co-host the Friday episodes with Alex, said on twitter: "'One Show' tonight - revelation. Jason and Alex - like they have been doing it for years. Bravo."
Former 'This Morning' presenter Richard Madeley also tweeted: "Well done to Jason and Alex on the opening sequence of 'The One Show' - fresh, upbeat, enthusiastic and not a trace of nerves."
Afterwards, Alex, 32, thanked actress Whoopi for making their first show run so smoothly.
She said: "We're over the moon that so many viewers tuned in to watch our first appearance and hope they all enjoyed it as much as Jason and I did.
"We were nervous before the show, of course. But Whoopi really helped by being such a great guest."
A BBC source also praised the on-screen couple, telling Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "What great figures. We're delighted with Jason and Alex. Memories of the old presenters will soon vanish."
A 'One Show' fan tweeted: "Adrian and Christine who?"
