Calvin Johnson and Muscles of Joy

One of Seattle's more prolific underground artist performs in both Glasgow and Edinburgh

An inspiration to unpaid music interns everywhere, Calvin Johnson began his musical career by volunteering at a local radio station in his hometown of Olympia, Washington when he was fifteen. KAOS-FM’s policy of playing underground artists, as opposed to just the corporate-backed giants, inspired Johnson’s own DIY ethos and led him to set up several bands including Dub Narcotic Sound Happening and Beat Happening. This solo tour sees him pairing his droney, somehow pleasantly moany voice with acoustic guitar, and is supported for his Glasgow date by the rather awesome surreal and percussive sound of Glasgow’s all-female collective, Muscles of Joy.

In Hyndland Community Hall, Glasgow, Tue 3 Aug with Muscles of Joy; Pilrig St Paul’s Church Hall, Edinburgh, Wed 4 Aug with Ben Butler & Mousepad and eagleowl
