Praise for Peel

‘If hero worship were sex, they’d all be carrying my babies‚’ said John Peel of punk rockers The Dwarves in a quote that sums up Teenage Kicks writer Paul Hodson’s personal attitude towards the enigmatic Radio 1 DJ.

‘He was a brilliant broadcaster, a genius, the voice of music‚’ enthuses Hodson. ‘About a year after he died I felt like I really wanted to write a play about his life.’ Focussing primarily on his relationship with his producer John Walters, Teenage Kicks is just that play.

‘He’s such an icon, I thought that it was important to look back on what he did, who he was and what qualities he had. The more I tried to understand him the more I felt that what he gave to broadcasting was very important. One thing that really concerns me is there isn’t another one, there isn’t a DJ who will put his neck on the block and say “I’m playing this”.’

The play sounds a worthy tribute to a man whose legend will live long after him.
