Exploring emotion through the death of a pet

After contemplating the logistics of travelling to Edinburgh in a tractor, Hugh Hughes moves on to describe his new show for this year’s Fringe. ‘In it, I’m comparing and contrasting the death of my father, with the death of my neighbour’s rabbit.’

Still on a high from last year’s success (the aptly named Floating), which recently returned from a sell-out run in New York, Hughes explains: ‘Story of a Rabbit is more about exploring emotion. It makes you look at death in a very different way. It’s fascinating; it happens to everyone and you never know when or what it is, but as Einstein once said, “imagination is more important than knowledge”.’ Hughes predicts an intense emotional reaction from the stalls. ‘The audience will go from one extreme to the other, being choked up to laughter, as the two stories collide,’ he says. ‘It incorporates video, power point and live music using keyboard, guitar (12-string and six) and banjo.’ This multi-media, visual feast sounds refreshingly original and deals with a concept everyone has to face sometime.
