Is This About Sex?

Let’s talk about sex

Not just about sex, this play examines the societal confines of the modern world, exposing the inextricable issues of identity with sexuality and gender and of course sex itself. After their undeniable success with Improbable Frequency last year, Irish company Rough Magic return with another promising offering.

Director Lynne Parker explains their winning formula: ‘It’s all about strong writing, strong ensemble and very strong performances. It’s a very modern play about a group of people, all of whom have problems with their emotional and sexual lives. It centres on a man who thinks he ought to be a woman, it’s about his journey and those he drags along.’ She describes it as ‘a very funny piece of writing with a real melancholy at the heart of it. It’s by no means a sex comedy alone. No one who sees this show will fail to recognise moments, whether they’re very difficult, poignant, funny or absurd.’

Traverse 3: The University of Edinburgh Drill Hall, 228 1404, 2–26 Aug (not 6, 13, 20), times vary, £16 (£11). Preview 1 Aug, noon, £11 (£5).
