Meow Meow in Beyond Glamour: The Absinthe Tour

A sauced up, claws out cabaret splash

‘It’s sequins and razors, my darling. That’s what my show’s about,’ explains Meow Meow, who deems her real name and place of origin ‘simply not necessary’ to the conversation. It is, she coos in a faint Aussie drawl, ‘all about the art.’

Her show, she admits, is a difficult one to define, reckoning she’s happily marooned somewhere between 1930s show tunes and post-punk thrash. Bertolt Brecht, she whimpers, is a personal hero, so his more political influences also make an appearance.

‘It’s more than just fluff. And, if it’s done well, there’s a good chance that, while some are eyeing up my boobs, someone in the audience might tear away a bit of the glitz and have a real think about it.’

David Bowie took such a shine to her work that he invited her to appear at his Highline Festival in New York last month. Bowie’s interest, she laughs, was proof positive that this gal is about more than just ‘great boobs.’

The Spiegel Garden, George Square Gardens, 0131 667 8940, 7–19 Aug (not 13), 11pm, £10.
