Super hip hop Heroes

The winners of the 2006 Tap Water Award for Dance, Last For One, will be all over Edinburgh this year. They’re one of four international hip hop troupes followed in the documentary, Planet B-Boy, which premieres at the EIFF. They’ll be staging dance interventions all over the city, starting at the Sick Kids, as part of their goodwill campaign ‘Heroes in Edinburgh’. And, like any superhero worth his salt these days, Odysseus, star of their Homeric reworking Spin Odyssey, has his own comic book.

Their mission? To help advance their craft. ‘B-boying has earned respect in the dance world for its technical difficulty, but it still hasn’t been widely accepted as legitimate theatre,’ says dancer Daniel Jun Kim, who also wrote the comic. ‘By pairing up a postmodern, urban dance form with classical Greek material, we are expressing our desire to witness b-boying evolve into a mature form of theatre.’

C, 0845 260 1234, 1–27 Aug (not 13, 20), 4.40pm, £8.50–£10.50 (£5.50–£9.50).
