Evangelist cabaret puts the fun into fundamentalism

Prominent US evangelist Oral Roberts announced to a television audience that, unless he raised $8 million by a given date, God would kill him. Viewers duly donated $9.1 million, and just a few months ago, Brazilian husband and wife televangelist team, Estevam and Sonia Hernandes, who stand accused of fraud, embezzlement and money laundering, were arrested in the USA. for cash smuggling.

Televangelism is big business and seems to be gaining popularity on British soil, creating the focus for Australian playwright Van Badham’s latest work.
However serious the subject matter, this looks set to be a very funny play. Through a cabaret of singalong sermons, delivered by charismatic members of the Greed Creed, Fanny Comfort and her husband Bob, we are taught meaningful lessons about the capitalist benefits of letting God into our lives. Hopefully these sermons won’t be as soporific as a traditional Sunday service. (Nicola Husband)
