Damon Albarn
Damon Albarn has revealed he was left in a state of panic when legendary musician Bobby Womack collapsed while recording with Gorillaz.
Damon Albarn was terrified when Bobby Womack collapsed as he auditioned for Gorillaz.
The singer and his bandmates were joined in the studio by the legendary musician to record a track for the group's third album 'Plastic Beach' but Damon was given a shock when Bobby passed out half way through.
He recalled: "The sessions with Bobby were like nothing I've ever experienced. I played him the track and told him to just improvise. After 45 minutes of amazing singing he passed out. I can't tell you how worrying it is to see Bobby Womack lose consciousness on your watch. It turned out that he's a diabetic."
Bobby - who says he came out of retirement to work with the group on the advice of his 23-year-old daughter - thought he'd blown his chance after the episode.
He said: "I remember eating a banana and when I woke up I was a Gorilla."
The resulting song became lead single 'Stylo', and Bobby, 66, says his daughter was thrilled with the outcome.
He told The Times newspaper: "My daughter is 23. She loves me, but she's never reacted to what I do the way she reacted to that track."
