Doing it for the kids

Anna Doherty (14), Lotte Fisher (13), Keira O’Sullivan-Robertson (13) and Archie Fisher (10) take their pick of the Book Festival’s exciting children’s programme

1 Charlie & Lola
Charlie and Lola books are possibly some of the best young children’s books ever written. Come along to this interactive event for one of the most fun parties ever! Play ‘I Will Never Not Ever Give Up My Seat’ musical chairs, make a wonderful collage and hear all about Charlie and Lola’s ever-funny, ever-fun adventures. We can’t wait for this event. Everybody should worship Charlie and Lola – they are the ‘bestest’ ever! 11 Aug, 4.30pm & 12 Aug, 10am, £3.50.

2 Myths & Monsters: Let the Odyssey Begin!
This is the best guide to any myth possibly known by any Greek mythologist. It teaches you how to be the greatest mythologist around and many other things. Join Dougald Steer on an exciting adventure. Great for any ‘-ology’ lovers. 13 Aug, 10.30am, £3.50.

3 Heroes vs Villains: Darren Shan vs Mark Walden
Darren Shan and Mark Walden are both very good children’s horror writers. Darren writes about the ‘goodies’ and Mark writes about the villains. Who will come out top? 15 Aug, 5pm, £3.50.

4 Luuurve is a Many Trousered Thing . . . with Louise Rennison
The books of Georgia Nicholson were fabulously amazing. We can’t wait for this event! Even if you haven’t read the books, you will soon catch on! Louise Rennison writes in a funny, imaginative and gripping way. We are counting the days! 19 Aug, 2pm, £3.50.

5 The End of Lemony Snicket?
This looks like a really interesting event. We liked the books and this seems to be a fun and interactive experience for people (children and adults!) of all ages. From 8 to 888. We can’t wait to meet Count Olaf. 19 Aug, 10.30am, £3.50.

6 Diary of a Chav with Grace Dent
Grace Dent is the author of Big Brother’s Blog and she’s back with a teenage novel: Diary of A Chav! This should be good for all teenagers who are fans of Louise Rennison as they are alike in their writing style. It will be a really great and fun event. 22 Aug, 4.30pm, £3.50.

7 Anthony Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz blocks out everything around you apart from the book because you are so engrossed by it. He is so engaging. The books are realistic but not too realistic, which makes them fun. 24 Aug, 4.30pm, £3.50.

8 Carol Ann Duffy
Carol Ann Duffy writes very contagious, enchanting stories and poems. This event looks very exciting for 8-year-olds and over, exercising the imagination to the extreme corners of the magical worlds inside your head. We would certainly recommend this because we enjoyed this sort of thing from the age of eight up until now. 26 Aug, 10am, £3.50.

9 Fairy Fun with Gwyneth Rees
Gwyneth Rees has the amazing ability to capture the hearts and imaginations of fairy and pixie lovers all over the world. Gwyneth has also written novels for older children (such as The Mum Detective and My Mum’s From Planet Pluto) and so this event would be suitable for all ages. 26 Aug, 11.30am, £3.50.

10 Horrible Histories with Martin Brown
If you liked the Horrible Histories then this is perfect for you. Illustrator Martin Brown is back in town for another ‘sketchingly’ good event! We can’t wait. History now is great, and art is a whole new exciting world. All round, this looks great! 26 Aug, 1.30pm, £3.50.

All events take place at Charlotte Square Gardens, 0845 373 5888.
