Flemish icon with two films about personality theft and rock music

A pair of Belgian movies at the EIFF will showcase the talents of Flemish superstar composer and actor Arno Hintjens. The 59-year-old’s surprisingly mature acting (for a pop star) can be sampled in Martine Doyen’s engrossing personality theft drama, Komma, in which he plays a man who wakes up in a morgue and steals a wallet from a corpse so he can start a new life. In Koen Mortier’s raucous comedy drama Ex Drummer about three young disabled musicians and their search for an able drummer, Arno provides much of the film’s great soundtrack.

The rough-voiced Arno sings partly in Dutch, English, French and Ostend dialect in what can only be defined as a mutant form of ‘Gallic rock’. No stranger to film, he’s appeared in three previous features, one of which, Camping Chaos, is a fine follow-up to the saucy comedy The Sexual Life of Belgians. Arno is, however, best known for his many film soundtrack contributions and is still most famous for singing the Flemish versions of the main songs in Toy Story. (Paul Dale)
