• Hairspray Enjoyable big screen version of the Broadway musical based on John Waters’ 1988 cult classic. See review. General release from Fri 20 Jul.

• Grey Gardens Albert and David Maysles’ wonderful 1975 documentary about fallen socialite septuagenarian Edith Bouvier Beale and her life in a crumbling East Hampton mansion with her equally bonkers daughter Edie. GFT, Glasgow on Sun 22 Jul only.

• Mikio Naruse The season of films by this master Japanese filmmaker continues with understated but uneasy familial drama When a Woman Ascends the Stairs and excellent marital discord drama Sound of the Mountain. Filmhouse, Edinburgh until Tue 7 Aug.

• Marlon Brando This retrospective hits its stride with iconic classics The Wild One, On the Waterfront and Last Tango in Paris. Filmhouse, Edinburgh until Sat 11 Aug.
