Who Are LuckyMe?

The people behind the music

Who are you?
Claude Speeed of American Men (along with Paul Carlin and Ali Lloyd).

Where do you come from?
We live in Edinburgh, Manchester and Glasgow, but Paul spends most of his life in various hotels and tour buses around the world playing drums for Dananananaykroyd.

What do you do?
I make music, both as part of American Men and Superisraelgoballistic! and also under my own name.

How did you get into that?
I’ve been playing in rock bands and messing with synths since high school. We formed AmericanMen in Barcelona shortly after our other band, RUSSIA (the three of us plus long time friend Tony Jaguar), stopped playing shows.

Describe your sound.
Laser rock futurism; the Schwarzgerat filled with flashing skulls and hieroglyphs; a neon megalith.

Most likely to …
Fall asleep at inappropriate times.

-----

Who are you?
Eclair Fifi aka Chestnut Chambers aka Casio Ho Down.

Where do you come from?
Edinbrap. Born and bred.

What do you do?
I DJ a lot and I was a chef by trade. I quit being a chef to become an art student, which is amazing - being able to draw and make origami without an excuse as it’s considered as ‘research and development’. Yaas.

Describe your sound.

Say one nice thing about someone else in the LuckyMe collective.
Joe is the muhfuhin bowsss.

Most likely to …
Drink coffee.

Least likely to

Drink tea.

Who are you?
Alex Laurenson aka. Dema aka. RKGB (Rich Kid Gang Bang)

Where do you come from?
Glasgow

What do you do?
DJing and production.

What labels are you signed to?
LuckyMe, but I have released music on New Dawn, Kool Kat Records, and a few others I can’t remember.

Describe your sound.
Hip hop club music and various other club-based music … and in some places non-club music … a bit of everything.

Say one nice thing about someone else in the LuckyMe collective.
They all inspire me on a ridiculous level.

Most likely to …
Drive everywhere, all the time.

Who are you?
Christina Kernohan (photographer extrordinaire)

Where do you come from?
Middle of nowhere / Northern Ireland.

What do you do?
Photography and art direction with Dom [Dom Sum] as part of LuckyMe Arts Collective.

And how did you get into that?
I got involved with LuckyMe through meeting Dom on the Visual Communications course at Glasgow School of Art. I’ve been creatively involved with LuckyMe since then [2001] shooting gigs, press shots and album covers. We now work on creative projects for other music artists, magazines etc. as well as our in-house work.

Why is LuckyMe so good?
As a group of artists, musically and creatively we are really diverse … we bounce ideas around, often have heated discussions and still manage to socialise together regularly. It really is one big family.

Say one nice thing about someone else in the LuckyMe collective.
Mike Slott has great hair.

Most likely to …
Say ‘look through your eyes!’ (meaning eyebrows) on a shoot. And tell the boys off for messing around when I’m trying to take their pictures.

-----

Who are you?
My name is Dominic Flannigan but I sometimes get called Dom Sum.

Where do you come from?
I’m a self-hating Edinburgher. I rep Glasgow.

What do you do?
I’m in a group with Martyn Flyn called The Blessings and together we run the LuckyMe label which keeps us pretty busy. I’m also a designer.

And how did you get into that?
I was young and naive and these subcultures were cool and alien. No one told me it would be really dumb to run a hip hop label with our base of influences — from Scotland.

What labels are you signed to?
LuckyMoi and now Nod Navigators / Kindred Spirits.

Why is LuckyMe so good?
It’s honest and we’re basically good people.

Describe your sound.

R&B

Say one nice thing about someone else in the LuckyMe collective.
Hudson Mohawke is the reason this label exists. It was on hearing his music many, many moons ago that Martyn decided to build a label and to see how it’s all developed is incredible to me.

Most likely to …
Say ‘thanks for being down’.

Least likely to …
Say ‘Great demo. Just Jay Dee it up and send it back to us.’

-----

Who are you?
Martyn Flyn aka. Fine Art

Where do you come from?
I’m from Inverstress now residing in Edinburgh

What do you do?
I’m half of The Blessings and co-owner of LuckyMe, both with Dom Sum.

And how did you get into that?
A misspent youth with underground hip hop, rave tape packs and Sade albums.

What’s so good about LuckyMe?
Unpretentious freshness.

Say one nice thing about someone else in the LuckyMe collective.
In my eyes Eclair Fifi is the best DJ in the country right now.

Most likely to …
Play new jack swing to a dubstep crowd.

-----

Who are you?
Rustie.

Where do you come from?
Pollokshields.

What do you do?
Music.

And how did you get into that?
God.

What labels are you signed to?

Why is LuckyMe so good?
We choose to be.

Describe your sound.
Salty, brash, annoying, sickly sweet.

Pizza.
