The 'Dawson's Creek' star spent the landmark day performing in Broadway play 'All My Sons', in New York, but husband Tom made sure the day was special.

As the curtain fell, the cast and crew presented the actress with a five-tiered cake - a surprise from the star, who was in Los Angeles promoting new film 'Valkyrie'.

Speaking to the audience, Katie's co-star John Lithgow said: "Tom Cruise, our good friend, devoted fan to the show, doting husband of Katie, could not be here tonight. He's heartsick that he couldn't be here... but he wanted to make his presence felt. So, he's joining us, inviting all of you, to celebrate Katie's birthday."

The audience sang 'Happy Birthday', while the brunette beauty and her two-year-old daughter Suri blew out the candles.

Afterwards, the cast and crew enjoyed the dessert and champagne, also provided by Tom.

Tom said: "I planned it so that when she comes out for the standing ovation, John would get the whole audience to wish her a happy birthday."
