Poets are being asked to lift their pens in a bid to pocket a £1000 prize, as part of an initiative by United Press. ‘It’s free to enter, and the aim of the competition is to encourage more people to try writing poetry,’ said Peter Quinn, managing director of United Press. Check out the website at www.unitedpress.co.uk or phone 0870 240 6190 for more details.

THE SILENT BATTLE RAGES ON
I MEET IT WITH A FORCE OF ONE
STILL STANDING STRONG AGAINST THE FOE
LIKE MERLIN WITH A WAVE OF WAND
IMAGINE-ALL MY WOE BE GONE
-I STAND BEFORE THE GATHERED STORM
MY THOUGHT SO CALM
IT STILLED THE RIPPLED POND
INDEED-THE VERY THOUGHT
THAT WAS TO CAUSE THEM

THE WRATH OF ASGARD ON THE WIND
DIMINISHED WITH THE DYING SOUND
IT IS MY BUSINESS TO CONFOUND
THOSE WOULD DISTURB THIS TRANQUIL AIR
-AND LOOKING ROUND
THE GATHERED HORDE
ALL SHEATHED THEIR SWORDS
AND COULD NOT RECALL THE REASON THEY WERE THERE

i CALL THIS ONE "CONFUSION TO THE ENEMY- THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE" I always title them at the end because until the end -I'm not sure what I'm writing about- I would like to donate 10 pounds for te help for heroes and submit this poem - but you make it so hard - please call me 07811 388 122 or E me
