Sometimes all it takes is a good tune and a kick-ass attitude. Alan Tyler and his Lost Sons of Littlefield have both to spare and while there is little here that will shake up the country rock canon, Lonesome Cowboys is a tremendously likeable record. Tyler, an Englander, must wake up every morning and wonder what vagary of fate sent him to Camden rather than Nashville but from the opening bars of ‘Rambling Girl’ it’s clear that geography is all that separates him from dustbowls and drawl. The alt-country finesse of ‘I’m a Gambler’ is Kenny Rogers singing in the North London rain. When he croons ‘Cowboys Don’t Cry’ I almost believe he knows of what he sings.
