Carrying the jazz message

Reminders of the legacy of the great Art Blakey and the hard bop academy that was his Jazz Messengers show no signs of abating. Alto saxophonist Bobby Watson headlined a show at the Glasgow Jazz Festival last month, his first in Scotland since 1994, and now trumpeter Valery Ponomarev returns for what has become an annual visit to the Fringe.

The Russian trumpeter has been a regular visitor since the early 90s. His reputation as a hard-hitting and inventive exponent of the hard bop style was forged during a spell with the Messengers after he escaped the old Soviet Union with false documents and fled to New York, and he has gone on to build on that experience. His latest residence at the Jazz Bar will see him lead a quintet that includes New York saxophonist Tim Armacost and German bassist Martin Zenker.
