Nordic cool meets Scottish heat
Saxophonist Tommy Smith’s current relationship with the Norwegian bass maestro Arild Andersen dates from 2005, when they got together as a duo at the Islay Jazz Festival. It was by no means their first encounter, however – Andersen was one of Tommy’s guests in the television series he hosted for BBC Scotland in the early 90s. They have developed their duo whenever their busy touring schedules have permitted.
This trio with Alyn Cosker was really supposed to have featured another drummer, Paolo Vinaccia, but his late lack of availability led to the invitation going out to the young Scot, who is part of Smith’s own quartet and the current incumbent of the drum seat in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He is renowned for his power and drive, and it will be fascinating to hear how he deals with the more spacious approach adopted by Smith and Andersen in this context.
The Hub, 1 Aug, 6pm, £15 (£12.50).
