Diverse, dynamic and daring approach inspired by Afro-Cuban folklore
You never know what Omar Sosa will do next. The Cuban-born virtuoso musician has turned his hand to everything from composing and arranging records to producing them, leading bands around the world, working with orchestras and knocking out tunes on both piano and percussion. And his musical output is just as diverse as he mixes classic jazz influences with a wide range of world music, funk, spoken word, electronica, rap, Latin rhythms, French chanson, North African trance music, European folk and various elements inspired by his Afro-Cuban roots.
It’s on stage, however, that this talented and charismatic chap is at his most thrillingly unpredictable, delivering dynamic performances with his improvisational approach, tangible emotion and cheeky sense of humour; he has even been known to encourage people onto their feet to join him in chorus vocals in an attempt to make more of a connection with the audience. Sosa visits Edinburgh in his incarnation as the Omar Sosa Trio, along with Mozambican bassist/vocalist Childo Tomas and Senegalese percussionist/singer Mola Sylla, and in the process adds a dash of mystery and oodles of modernity to the Festival. Prepare to have your perceptions challenged.
Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 0131 668 2019, 2 Aug, 8.30pm, £15-£18.
